NDC Speaks On The Economy: Will Akufo-Addo Grant These 5 Demands Of The NDC?

Vice president Bawumia last month presented a lecture on the state of the economy. In that presentation he boldly insisted that the state of the economy can be attributed to 4 issues; two caused by the erstwhile NDC government and the other 2 external conditions. He exonerated the ruling party from any form of contributing to the fall of the economy. The lecture was followed later by the mid-year review by Ken Ofori Atta who also stated that Covid-19 and the Ukraine-War had dealt the country a hard blow.

Well, the opposition NDC also addressed the press today, Wednesday, August 3, 2022 and delivered their own state of the economy. Addressing the press, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC Communications Officer solely blamed the government for the bad state of the economy. He tagged the government as corrupt and abusive. Sammy made 5 demands on the president and stated that granting these 5 requests can help rescue the economy and improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.

The first demand was the immediate repeal of the obnoxious and counter-productive E-levy act of %1.5 on MoMo and electronic transactions. The NDC again asked for the immediate repeal of the punitive Covid-19 Levy of 1% and taxes on NHIL. Third on the list was the scrapping of the fuel taxes, borla taxes, energy sector levy taxes etc.

Fourthly, Sammy Gyamfi called for the immediate suspension of the 9 pesewas of the bost margin, price stabilization and recovery levy of 16 pesewas and 14 pesewas per liter for petrol. The fifth of the demands was interesting. The NDC once again called on President Akufo-Addo to get rid of Bawumia, the head of the economic management team and Ken Ofori Atta, the finance minister. The NDC have severally made this call but this has gone unheeded.

Indeed, Ken himself has insisted that he has done nothing wrong to step down. Ken Ofori Atta has encouraged all Ghanaians to share the burden with the government to build back the economy. Despite these demands from the NDC it is difficult seeing the ruling NPP government granting these requests. The government might consider some of these demands but demand number 5 is non-negotiable.

President Akufo-Addo has always noted that Ken Ofori Atta is the best for the nation. Akufo-Addo is not known for reshuffling or sacking a minister. In his 6 years in power he has only sacked 1 minister and despite pressure months ago on the health minister he still held on to him. The NDC might have had their press conference but the possibility of getting the President act on them are slim? Do you agree with the NDC demands? Will Akufo-Addo listen?
