Meet the girl who was born pregnant (Photos)

This is the case of a baby girl who was born with her own twin sister, unformed but still growing with its own umbilical cord, inside her. The little girl called Itzamara, born on February 22 in Barranquilla, Colombia, is an incredibly rare example of ‘fetus-in-fetu’ births, first described in 1808 but rarely seen since.

This was discovered during an ultrasound when doctors discovered that the woman had two umbilical cords but one foetus.

An emergency cs was quickly performed two weeks before she was due. Day old Itzamara had a cs to remove her own twin who was inform of a mass with no heart and brain. Both surgeries were successful.

Fetus-in-fetu, is an incredibly rare condition, occurring in only about 1 in every 500,000 births. It’s not clear exactly why it happens .

One theory is that the mass begins as a normal foetus but becomes enveloped inside its twin.
